Glioblastoma Multiforme Brain Cancer Awareness

Kristi Bates Altgilbers, my baby sister, my only sibling was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme Brain Cancer October 13, 2013. She went through 2 surgeries to remove tumors, chemotherapy, and radiation. She was 43 years old, always healthy, larger than life! A wife of 26 years, a mother who lived for her 2 sons ages 26 and she met Jesus face to face on her youngest sons 16th birthday November 23, 2014.

Kristi touched so many lives, she brought so many people to the Lord, Jesus Christ! In fact after she had difficulty standing she was adamant about going to her Church, Cowan Baptist Church, to give her testimony. We didn’t know how she would be medically able but she did and she said if she could bring one person to The Lord it would be worth it and she did that night , one of her youngest sons friend. She…

She was only capable of even going because God gave her the strength to make it there and was there with her through her whole testimony.
She was a Light that always shined and still does through all of us who love and miss her dearly. I’m so grateful and thankful I was blessed to have her as my sister.  Even though as all siblings,  we had our differences and was at odds occasionally, but the love we had for each other never changed. When she asked me to do something or needed her big sister to take care of something,  I did. Although never little things lol, always big. So now that she needs a voice, to conquer the biggest challenge I’ve ever taken on for her, I am, even if it takes me until I meet my Lord face to face.
Glioblastoma Multiforme Brain Cancer Awareness will be forefront as will the call for donations for more research.
I, as a nurse of 28 years,  know this is such a complex, resistant, and agressive cancer. Per statistics GBM has been known about since 1926.
They have placed it in the Organization NORD (National Organization of Rare Diseases) this upsets me very much because it is far from rare! It is so prevelant. The only “Rare ” thing about it is the knowledge of the medical community. It needs to be removed from that organization and I have sent them an email stating that.
I completely understand the difficulty of clinical trials for GBM because the patients doesn’t live long enough to truly test. The Average lifespan is 14.6 months,  that’s with removing operable tumors, radiation and chemo (TMZ).
Seeing that the regimen used now is not effective in reducing tumor size, reoccurring tumors, rate of return, that’s why any researcher that has a trial available, it should be made available for every patient in their own state to prevent traveling and being away from their family since their time is limited and precious.
I know when diagnosed with a cancer that has such a minimal amount of time to live, they will instinctively grasp at anything for more time,  traveling away from family is the last thing on their mind. That’s why they shouldn’t have to travel. I know drugs can be transported via courier to wherever needed.
Dr. Henry Friedman at Duke gives us so much Hope with the research and dedication to finding anything to help those diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme.
The Tug McGraw Foundation does incredible work for GBM.
I have researched for about a year, started Contacting everyone I felt may have the power or investment in this about 3 months ago. God has lead me to the right people,  and they have helped me tremendously!
I am planning “Keep Kristi’s Light Shining” fundraising events.
I will post them when date available.
I also want to make sure if you do not know Our Lord Jesus Christ or know about his unconditional love and not yet to be saved, Please know God gave his only Son Jesus to die on the cross for you and I, He Died to save us from our sins and give us eternal life.  He loves us unconditionally, forgives us when we sin and has us an eternal home in Heaven. Ask him into your heart, your life , letting him know that you believe that he died upon the cross for you ,to give you eternal life and to forgive you for your sins and arose from the tomb after he died upon the cross and went to Heaven. Seek a pastor to lead you through this and follow through with Baptism to wash your sins away, making you new in Christ in your new journey as a Christian. It’s a Gift we have been given for free, just to believe and walk with him.
A Wonderful Daily Devotional Book that was my sisters and mine and everyone I know who has it favorite,  ” Jesus Calling ” by Sarah Young. I highly recommend it for any and everyone!!
